I skipped TWO NIGHTS of sleep this week (not consecutively) because my sleeping schedule as so off (I was moving into Vampire Sleeping Schedule territory), largely as a result of the ABSOLUTE SHITTON of Final Fantasy XIII-2 I've been playing. Like, a lot, guys. Just a whole lot.

My World Religions professor from about a year ago (I've added him on facebook since I don't have class with him anymore and he is that cool) posted a thing on FB today (which he does often, this is not new, this quote just happens to be especially cool):

"As the conjunction of fiction and redescription suggests, poetic feeling itself also develops an experience of reality in which invention and discovery cease being opposed and where creation and revelation coincide. But what then does reality mean?" ~Ricoeur, The Rule of Metaphor, 291

Let it sink in. Let the words flow over you. It's the sort of thing I wish I had vocalized first (difficult, because Ricouer lived in like the 1500s or something, I forget. Centuries ago, anyway).

It's very--I don't know. It made me think of fandom?

"A friend is someone who won't stop until he finds you and brings you home."

Is that a Naruto sentiment if you've ever heard one?

(It's actually from Due South. Just a few eps in, even. I had to pause the show just to share that quote, because omg, that should be like the SasuNaru tagline or something.)

Quick Superhero AU ficbit: here. It's not complete, but it's not at a cliffhanger, either.

I have a German final tomorrow, but I haven't started studying yet. Fandom is just more interesting, y'know?Collapse )

So, finals are this week, and, like, I could read an entire English novel tonight? Or, I could play with the Kindle Fire boyf's mom bought me (did you know you can download eBook versions of fic on AO3? I AM NEVER BUYING ANOTHER BOOK AGAIN AT THIS RATE), and go through old notepad and Word docs, checking to see what half-written things I've left laying around.

Two drabbles, with the theme of first crushes. G rating.

I think I never posted these before because I'd been planning to add more drabbles, but I think I'll take just about anything right now. (Plus, they're cute and I just wanted to share them.) Lately, I've started writing some original fic again (baby steps) and it shouldn't be too long before I'm properly back into the swing of things. (Seriously, the deciding factor has been the Kindle Fire and my ability to stealthiy read fanfic in public.)

Well, for a given value of stealthily, anyway. Click for inappropriate anecdote.Collapse )

If you have to put a guide at the opening of the fic to explain which anglicized names represent which characters, you are doing it wrong.

(exceptions being fandoms like Digimon where there are canon anglicized names, in which case you STILL shouldn't need a guide)

I'll admit, I've been trying to write lately. (Reading fanfic is always the first step back into fandom. well, that and having a fandom.) I tried NaNo this year, got about 6k in, and then dropped out because fuck my life. (15 credit hours is too much for me; I suspect it would not be if teachers did not have a universal system of when to give out major assignments; seriously, it's like clockwork, one teacher says "TEST THIS WEEK," and then s do the other four.)

Um, anyway, just after NaNo I got into a big writing mood, and I mean, it's still just bits and pieces of original fiction (the more I write it, the more I focus on what I should do to make it publisheable in a capacity that will make me money, and the less I actually follow through with my idea of publisheable, and the more I let the usual slash and fairy-jargon seep in), but that's how it starts every time, so. Progress?

One of my favorite authors is no longer online.Collapse )

My thoughts are mixed, but that's not to say it was bad.Collapse )

This is the only fandom-related thing I've done lately. I haven't really read or kept up with any canon, just watched netflix with the boyf and started (finally) reading the enormous backlog of unread novels on my bookshelf. I have started to write again (a little bit at a time), just this original 'verse (gen, with probably enough of a solid friendship between the four main characters to make any ship feasible--or, I hope, I haven't really written much of it yet), and I've been trying to convince myself to edit/finish a few pieces I've had lying around. If I don't post anything by the end of next month (god, I hope I don't go that long without a post again), then I'll start posting drabbles. Music-based, Christmas requests (holy shit, is it really September? God.), something.

Boyf's best friend's wife pointed out helpfully (a week after we got the kitten) that Lawrence was, in fact, a girl and that the pound totally lied to us. We have renamed her Lily.

Haha, whoops.

Prior to this, I'd kept warning Lawrence that we'd have to rename him Florence if he didn't stop being such a crybaby. I feel a little silly now.

I'm starting to get this nagging, empty feeling because I haven't finished anything lately.Collapse )

Maybe something online, maybe something off, idek. I'm starting to get to that point where there aren't enough people in the world who care to hear me ramble long enough for me to say all the things I want to say, so I need to put them on paper. I used to get to sleep better when I kept a journal, so maybe I'll start doing that again.

(Haha, this is why I became a writer.)

Two rants today: one about crossovers (which doubles as a rave in sections) and one about RL writing feedback.Collapse )

Also, boyf and I got a kitten a few days ago! He is a black tabby and we named him Lawrence. 8D I'll have pictures as soon as I find a cord for my phone or whenever boyf uploads his. <3

I use this username for a lot of things, so I kind of see a lot of myself around, but in my googling, I did finally hit something TOTALLY AWESOME. Somebody get sirona in here, too, she's gonna want to see this:

Click me.

I'm going to, I don't know, sit here and flail for a few hours or something. I'll let you know when I'm coherent again.

I think I think about physical scars more often than most people. This is probably because I have some on my face. The problem with that, though, is that unlike my thing about names, the scars don't really bother me, so I never use them when I'm writing. I forget that sometimes people get self-conscious about things like that, because I'm not.

What about Naruto, for example?Collapse )

This is just a goofy gen-fic because I love writing Karin.

Warnings: None in particular.
Pairings: Mostly gen, except for Karin. (Onesided Karin/Naruto)
Rating: PG (language, I think?)
Summary: Karin's first week or two in Konoha. Kind of.
Notes: I really don't know why I haven't posted this--I think I expected myself to expand it? Anyway, it's just a short cute thing. (I kind of wish I had a better title this time around. I'm getting rusty at this.)

I've got a bit of free time today (no classes, just had one final and it was just an essay turn-in, nothing expected to be done in class) so I thought I'd type up some fic and work on something maybe.

Mostly I've been reading it and typing up notes for fic.

Have you ever written something and not remembered it?Collapse )

Boyf doesn't like the Beastie Boys. He's pretty tolerant about music--lets me play whatever I want in the car, for the most part, except the Beastie Boys. He always wants me to skip them. It's not a big deal since I only have a few songs and I don't listen to them much. It's just that I really like them when I do want to listen to them, so. I don't know. This makes me irrationally sad.

What can you do with an English major, anyway?Collapse )

LOL, WRITING? Do I even do that anymore?Collapse )

Finals are this week, and May 6 I'll be free (but that's my dad's birthday so I probably won't be on until May 7)!

I haven't written much of anything lately, but I do have some half-written things in my backpack that need to be typed up, so it's about time for that. And Christmas drabbles, lol. (I'm wondering if it's too much to wait until July on those, just so I can write them at the same time Cartoon Network usually does their Christmas in July special.)

Funny story.Collapse )

I am now my school newspaper's copyeditor. I get one credit hour to be a grammar Nazi, and if I fail to Nazi hard enough, I can get in trouble. This wouldn't be a problem except that I'm required to do my grammaring in AP style--short for Associated Press.

Who is your favorite mythical creature/character, and why?

This is just a really neat question.Collapse )

In other news: Feminism and Slash. (LOL, transitions are for suckas.)

I have to do a research paper related to a short story we covered in class. It's due... eh, I dunno when. The deadline's a long way off, but I have to have annotated sources by next Tuesday.

So, I'm wondering if anyone on my f-list has seen any well-written fan-essays on why slash is or isn't a feminist activity. I have a few articles (I'm surprised to have found any at the library, but most aren't really feminism and slash so much as feminism or slash, but really, it's pretty cool, either way), but I haven't really looked over fandom that much. I know there are definitely some feminism essays in Supernatural fandom, but I think most of those are more this-is-a-misogynist-show than slash-is-lady-empowerment/oppression.

We've been doing short story cycles in English this semester, so it's neat to see an author's quirks, unintentional or not, poke through and show themselves in completed stories. I'm not used to reading single authors so much that I notice long-running themes in their works.

It's made me start to wonder what kinds of themes crop up in my works regularly. It's a little harder to tell, sometimes, with fanfiction, since I usually work with a preset world, but fantasy is something I usually consciously put into works.

But in original fiction, my writings are different. I still have the same prose style, but when it comes to characters--different themes appear in characterization.Collapse )
